After years of both fan campaigning and some self-promotion, Donald Glover finally got a big role that he undoubtedly deserves. Although it may not be Miles Morales, as many would’ve hoped, it’s certainly a great role for him to buy into. For the Han Solo Movie, Donald Glover will be joining Alden Ehrenreich’s Han Solo as a young Lando Calrissian.
With a film that’s questionable in terms of whether or not it even needs to exist, this was a great fan-pleasing casting choice to help give potential moviegoers extra incentive to go see it when it inevitably comes out. A number of fans voiced their displeasure for the choice of Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, but a big part of that can be chalked up to a general uncertainty with what he’ll be able to bring to the role due to unfamiliarity with his previous work.
With Donald Glover, he’s gained a loyal fan following due to his start on internet skits with Derrick Comedy, his well-known role in Community, and his current role in his self-made show Atlanta. His credentials are more well-known, so this will certainly be a more well-regarded casting choice. It helps that Lando isn’t held as highly in regard as a character like Han solo, where fans would’ve always disagreed with whatever final choice was made.
Further details on the Han Solo standalone movie are few and far between, but Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are directing (so EVERYONE has to check out) with original Star Wars writer Lawrence Kasdan writing. The film is expected to come out sometime in 2018.
