Hello Games break their silence with a promise of things to come

You might remember a little game with a lot of promise coming out in the Summer called No Man’s Sky. Easily one of the most anticipated games of 2016, No Man’s Sky was an unmitigated failure, from the promises that came thick and fast in the build up getting people so hyped up that when it was delayed, the lead developer, Sean Murray, received death threats. Following the games release however, a tidal wave of criticism and disdain was thrown at Hello Games for promising a galaxy of features and producing a game that barely looked the shadow of what was expected and we were assured would be delivered.

Since then, things went from bad to worse for Hello Games, with refunds being handed out left, right and center; their official Twitter account being hacked with the words “No Man’s Sky was a mistake.” being sent out across the Twitterverse and just a general feeling of being let down. A lot of gamers were a bit like parents towards Hello Games – “I’m not angry, I’m disappointed that you’ve let me down.” and those words cut deep, whether you’re a naughty child or a Surrey, UK based games developer.

Well despite being in a bit of an exile since the start of September, Hello Games have finally spoken again with a new post on the official No Man’s Sky website. The latest post from Hello Games is all about the next update to the game which will be coming soon called the “Foundation Update”, although more in-depth patch notes and information will come soon as well, they did say this:

“This week Hello Games will be releasing an update to No Man’s Sky. We’re calling it The Foundation Update, because we have added the foundations of base building, and also because this is putting in place a foundation for things to come.”

Base building will be coming to No Man’s Sky which could end up being quite a good addition to the game, but I would remain weary of their comment that the update is putting in place a foundation for things to come.” Once bitten and all that you know…

Having said that, surely no games development studio would be foolish enough to start promising more things that they just can’t deliver?

What do you think of this? Would an update that includes base building tempt you back to this galaxy-spanning game? Let us know in the comments below, the RGM Forums or on Twitter.
