Opinion: Will Project NX Fail?

So with 2017 coming up fast, anticipation for Nintendo’s next console has been ramping up. But what will Project NX look like and will it be successful? Find out as we look at this and more.

The WII U

The WII U launched back in November of 2012 and was the first 8th generation console. The launch titles for WII U were mostly games that launched on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 and were ported to the WII U. The only exclusives that launched with the WII U were Zombi-U and NintendoLand.

There were a few problems surrounding the WII U’s launch and I’m going to highlight a few of them right now.

Marketing

The marketing for WII U was part of the problem for many casual gamers who may not follow gaming expos or check gaming websites. Many general consumers were confused by the WII U, thinking it was just an add on for the WII.

Do you feel Nintendo may have screwed up the WII U on day one because of the lack of proper marketing? Let us know in the comments below.

Third party support

Another huge problem for the WII U was the lack of third-party games on the system. There were very few third-party games for the WII U during it’s lifetime with most of them landing as launch or near launch titles for the console. Arguably, the biggest 3rd party games for the system were Batman: Arkham City — Armored Edition, Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag and Call Of Duty Black Ops 2 with a few other third-party games after the launch of the system

Wii USales

The sales for the WII U as of June 30, 2016 were 13.02 Millions hardware sales and 88.72 Million software sales with the most sold game for the system was Mario Kart 8. Now just for comparison the Xbox One and Playstation 4 both outsold the WII U in the first year of availability.

Project NX Rumours

Rumors for Project NX are at a fever pitch as of late it would seem with recent rumors saying that NX will launch next year in March. There are also reported rumors saying that the game pad will be like the WII U, with a touchscreen but will also include two detachable controllers. We won’t know what to expect until Nintendo officially announces the console which will hopefully be soon with the console launching in March of 2017.

Will the next home console from Nintendo fail like the WII U did? I don’t personally think so.

The WII U did not fail it just didn’t do as well in the sales as the WII did or as well out of the gate as the other 8th generation consoles are doing. Does that mean the WII U is a bad console? Not at all.

The WII U may not have 3rd party support but it does have killer exclusives, and I think as long as Nintendo makes fantastic exclusives for Project NX then the console will still do okay. But what Nintendo could take from the downside of the WII U is the lack of 3rd party support. If they fix that issue for Project NX then I think the console will be a success.
