It’s that time of year again, the time for sweaters, pumpkin pie, slasher flicks, AAA games, and spooky stuff!
Overwatch, Blizzard’s smash-hit hero shooter/MOBA-lite/gift from God, is utilizing my favorite season to get me to love it even more!
Blizzard, being the expert character designers and businessmen that they are, have added a ton of new cosmetic items. These are my favorites:
Best Skins
- Ghoul – Ana
- Pumpkin – Reaper
Best Emote: Candy – Ana
Best Highlight Intro: Pumpkin Carving – Genji
Best Spray: Gummy Hog – Everyone!
Best Voice Line
“Ooh, Scary!” – Waifu Tracer
Victory Poses
Weakest part of the update. They’re all pretty much the same.
Now, for the best part of the entire update: Junkenstein’s Revenge.
It’s honestly the most fun I have ever had in Overwatch. It’s a 4-player (Soldier 76, McCree, Hanzo, and the best ever, Ana) co-op PvE horde mode. If that sounds confusing, just think about Left 4 Dead…but with Overwatch’s polish and charm.
Junkrat is re-purposed as “Dr. Junkenstein”, a mad scientist who has plotted to take over the Eichenwalde Castle with his allies. You, one of the aforementioned 4 characters, must keep the castle doors intact, and hold off barrages of zombified robots, or “Zomnics”.
In between waves, boss battles occur. Yes. Boss battles. In Overwatch. Let your mind be blown.
These bosses are the four Legendary Halloween skins. Pumpkin Reaper, Witch Mercy, Mad Scientist Junkrat, and Monster Roadhog.
It’s not a very long or in-depth experience, but I loved it for two reasons.
Firstly, the cramped space and sense of feeling outnumbered really force teamwork. I finally felt like my team needed me as a medic main.
Also, it makes me extremely excited for the future. While limited, there is a narrative to Junkenstein’s Revenge. It shows that Blizzard has dropped their apparent aversion to in-game storytelling in Overwatch.
Final Verdict on Overwatch‘s Halloween Update: It’s amazing. Overwatch continues to be the best game I’ve played all year, only further improving itself. I’d be thoroughly surprised and impressed if another game makes me feel this way this year.
