Pirates of the Caribbean 5: The Curse of the Changing Title

The Pirates of the Caribbean films have been setting trends since the first installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl was released in 2003. Whether it was blazing a lucrative path for films based around theme park rides or new standards for special effects or for simply milking a franchise with one over long movie after the next.

And now with the impending release of the 5th (yes, fifth) movie in the franchise The Pirates of the Caribbean look to set a new trend – changing the title of your movie based on the country it’s showing in.

According to the latest issue of Empire magazine, and reported by Variety News Club, the newest Pirates of the Caribbean film will release under different names for different countries.

Pirates 5 will hardly be the first film to be released in a different country with an altered title. But it looks to be pushing the envelope by announcing 3 separate titles for 3 different locations.

In the United States the film will release as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. While in the U.K. It will carry the title Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge. And finally, in France, Spain and Italy, the film will be titled Pirates of the Caribbean: The Revenge of Salazar.

It’s worth noting that the separate titles aren’t merely an instance of translation and language issues, but are three separate titles sanctioned by Disney.

Fans of the Pirates franchise will no doubt get their fill of swashbuckling adventure, stumbling Johnny Depp and first rate piratey CGI, no matter which of the separately titled films they end up seeing when it’s released next year.
