Something For The Weekend – Civilization II

Civilization II

Good news everyone! It’s only Friday, and as such it’s time to bring you Something For The Weekend! Last week’s inclusion of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic really made me feel nostalgic for the great titles of my own gaming past. Especially those games that might not be well played these days or easily accessible. Also, just lately I’ve been playing an awful lot of Sid Meier’s Civilization VI, so really this weeks game could only be one thing – Sid Meier’s Civilization II.

That’s right, the classic turn-based strategy from 1996, Civilization II is regarded by many as one of the best games of all time and with good reason. Despite having already put more time into Civilization VI than any other game over the Christmas and New Year break, I started playing Civilization II a few days ago, and it complete eclipsed the latest Sid Meier game.

However, being an older game it’s not exactly easy to run on modern computers, especially those that are 64-bit, which is quite probably the majority of you out there. Never fear though, if you do have an old copy of Civilization II knocking about (ideally either Multiplayer Gold Edition or Test of Time) then this handy thread on the CivFanatics forum can guide you though the process of getting your Civilization II on! Failing that, if you still have your old PS1 then you can load it up on there as well – although it’s not quite the same as the PC version, come on people, you need a keyboard and mouse for that bad boy!

With a little bit of work, effort and commitment you will get Civilization II working on your PC this weekend and believe me, you won’t regret a second of it, however I would love to see an HD remaster of this game for modern computers. The same music, the same High Council, the same gameplay mechanics, just maybe brushed up graphics on the units and maps and the ability to play on new computers. I can but dream.

What do you think of Sid Meier’s Civilization II? A game you would recommend to those who haven’t had the pleasure?
