UWP Background Music Player App for Xbox One supports playing music from USB

The latest Xbox One update finally delivered the ability to listen to music in the background, however only using apps such as Groove Music, iHeart Radio etc. but no way to plug in an external hard drive or USB stick to play your own music.

BackgroundMusicTweetWell that is all about to change now that the roll out of UWP (Universal Windows Platform) apps has begun with MSN weather, Microsoft maps and more already being made available on Xbox One. Director of Program Management at Xbox and Windows Mike Ybarra revealed via Twitter that a new background music player is now available on Xbox One thanks to UWP. Xbox One owners can find the app, Simple Background Music Player by using the search option in the Xbox Store.

Created by TroubleAcres Apps, Simple Background Music Player will allow Xbox One owners to plug in a USB Stick or USB external hard drive that is formatted as FAT32 or NTFS. The music files must be stored in a folder called “Xbox Music Library” on the USB device, select the app to begin playing music in the background before simply starting a game to listen to your own music whilst gaming.

Simple Background Music Player currently supports MP3, FLAC and WMA music files with more to be supported in the future.
