In May 2015 the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, NY, founded their Video Game Hall of Fame. To find out just a little bit more about it, check out their promotional video for it:
So games that are widely recognised and remembered, enjoyed long popularity, have been significant on a global scale and have influenced other games, media and pop culture.
So 2016’s Inductee’s are:
- Grand Theft Auto III (2001) – A very real example of a “game changer”. When Rockstar changed GTA from being top-down to 3rd person, gaming changed forever. A plethora of amazing voice talent helped to compliment a fantastic game that is as playable now as it was 15 years ago.
- The Legend of Zelda (1986) – A pioneering game from the mid-80’s, it pretty much founded the “open-world” adventure game created by the brains behind Super Mario – Shigeru Miyamoto.
- The Oregon Trail (1971) – A game that may not be overly well known outside of the good ol’ US of A – the game itself was used in schools throughout the 70’s and 80’s to teach American History. It undoubtedly will have introduced millions of young Americans to this wonderful world of Video Games.
- The Sims (2000) – What can I say about The Sims which you don’t already know? Chances are you (yes – you) reading this played The Sims, or one of it’s successors. Who would have thought that a game about living a life and trying to progress in work or in your love/family life would be so popular?
- Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) – Sonic’s debut on the Sega Genesis was designed to go toe-to-toe with the little fat man in red from Nintendo, and ultimately we all know how that turned out. However the speedy blue hedgehog definitely had an effect on the games industry.
- Space Invaders (1978) – If you were to ask anyone who doesn’t play video games or pays no attention whatsoever to video games to name a video game – chances are, they’d say Space Invaders. The arcade game from the late 70’s has proved itself over the course of almost 40 years as being a game that will live on and on and on and on…
