Sony recently announced the final free games that will be available for PlayStation Plus subscribers to download in December. Recently we covered Microsoft’s Xbox Live Free Games with Gold offerings for subscribers to it’s and in our humble opinion there is a great value to being an Xbox Live subscriber.
That led us to wondering how Sony’s PlayStation Plus offering matches up to Microsoft’s. PlayStation Plus for 2015 offered 72 games in total across all PlayStation platforms which include PS4, PS3, and PS Vita totaling over $1000.00 in games, with the average value of each game being $15.25. The annual cost of PlayStation Plus in the U.S. is $49.99 for 12 months of service which is required if you wish to play online with friends.
However if you take into account the $1096.78 total of all games on offer in 2015 for PS Plus subscribers it would appear that there is indeed a value to had.
There are other benefits to be a PlayStation Plus subscriber such as receiving added discounts of up to 75% off on already discounted titles in PlayStation Store sales. Members also receive early access to betas and demos and 10GB of cloud storage for game saves.
Another highlight is that many of the games offered in the monthly free games for PS Plus feature cross buy and cross play across all three of Sony’s console platforms, which of course means that for example you can download a qualifying title on your PS4, play, save it, and continue play on your PS3 or PS Vita.
There are of course differences between Sony and Microsoft’s free monthly game strategy in that games you receive from Microsoft are yours to keep whether you continue as a subscriber to Xbox Live or not. On the other hand with PlayStation Plus you have only have access to the free downloadable titles while you are a current subscriber. This of course could be viewed as a negative by some but that of course is up to the individual consumer to decide.
So looking back on 2015’s PS Plus free game offerings and it’s over $1000.00 in free downloadable titles you could say that there is a definite value here that most gamers should find appealing.
