Nintendo 2DS to receive a price drop at the end of August

Nintendo has announced a price drop for it’s Nintendo 2DS in North America from $129.99 to $99.99. The price drop takes effect on August 30th and still includes a bundled copy of Mario Kart 7. Here is what Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing Scott Moffitt had to say about the price drop:

At a suggested retail price of $99.99, Nintendo 2DS is an even more attractive introductory option for first-time gamers. The new lower-priced hardware combined with the strong lineup of new games launching this year and arguably the best library of games in this generation makes it a great time to be a Nintendo fan”.

It’s no big surprise to see a price drop for the 2DS considering Nintendo just announced that the $2billion behemoth Yo-Kai Watch franchise which is hugely popular in Japan, will be released in the US in November. Nintendo is hedging it’s bets that the game can find the same big audience here and having an affordable entry point console could help bolster sales.

Nintendo also has some pretty big first party titles coming in 2015 for the 3DS with Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes and Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon all arriving in the near future, which may be another reason consumers may look to pick up the cheaper 2DS.
