Michael Pachter: “PC Gamers are like racists” – Response from a PC Gamer.

So according to Michael Pachter, PC gamers are like racists. The “star” of the Pach-Attack for GameTrailers and currently the host of Pachter Factor for SIFTD Games has branded PC Gamers as being “like racists” in an interview with that oh-so reputable UK Tabloid, The Daily Star. For those of you lovely people outside the UK, The Daily Star is about as respected a newspaper as used toilet-roll is, I mean their 2 top stories (at the time of writing) is about a guy on benefits who has spent £20,000 to look like David Beckham and drunk university students on freshers week so yeah.

Anyway, Michael Pachter was interviewed by them recently to get his take on the PlayStation 4 Pro, and whether or not it could lure away PC Gamers as was claimed originally by Sony. His response…well it was definitely controversial…

“I think PC Gamers are like racists; they only like there own kind and they have no interest in venturing out and mixing with other races,”

Whoa, whoa, whoa and whoa. Whoa. Bella – hold my calls, I’m going in.

Michael…would you care to elaborate on this?

“PC gamers are arrogant twits who are convinced what they do is better than what anybody else can possibly do.

“However if you were an Xbox owner and you’ve always wondered what it’s like to be a PlayStation owner, this is a great opportunity.

“And I think if you’re not a [next-gen] console owner at all – which would include a subset of PC users – this is the one you would buy. This [PS4 Pro] is the obvious choice.”

So let me start by saying that here at Real Game Media, we don’t engage in ardent fan-boy-ism. Do you know why? Because being a gamer is about more than being devoted to your platform of choice. I’m a PC Gamer, and though I might engage in some fun and harmless banter with those in RGM who are devoted Xbox or PlayStation gamers (as we all do) I fully respect and can see the benefits of both consoles. The same goes for the Xbox and PlayStation gamers within RGM. We are all linked by our total and devoted love of games – not games systems.

For Michael Pachter to spout that PC gamers are “like racists” is a broad-brush, negative comment about a group of individuals…not unlike a racist comment. In an age of racist attacks on foreigners around the world including the UK and Australia, this was a really poor analogy to make Pach-Man. And he shows his utter lack of knowledge in gaming in general or even in the economics of “normal people” by claiming that it is a great opportunity for Xbox Gamers to try the PlayStation to see “what it’s like”. I’m sorry, but we don’t all have buckets of cash to spend around $400 on something to see what it’s like. I’ll be honest with you, it’s the main reason why I don’t have a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

His only decent advice in this piece was that the PlayStation 4 Pro would be an “obvious choice” for those who haven’t yet bought one of the current consoles. Otherwise he was just being poisonous towards PC gamers.

I would like to say that he raised some interesting points, or that he came across as an intellect who rightly backed his words up with something solid so as to not look like an idiot…but he didn’t. He just came across as a moron who was looking to troll.

I would like to say though, as a PC gamer, that yes – there are those of us who think that console gaming is a lesser art, that it’s beneath them, that it’s laughable compared to the power of the PC. But that there are also Xbox gamers who think the same and PlayStation gamers who think the same. But in the most part gamers identify as just that – gamers. For someone to come along and be so venomous towards a “race” of gamer…well wouldn’t that be deemed as racist in itself?

Anyway, this was the first time I heard of this guy and will most likely be the last time as well. So…water off a ducks back!

What do you think? Are PC Gamers like racists? Are Xbox Gamers like racists? Are PlayStation gamers like racists? Are Nintendo gamers like racists? Or are we all just gamers together? Let us know what you think in the comments below, the RGM Forums or on Twitter.
