Steam Sale Writer’s Picks – September 12th

100 selling games

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, good night. Whatever time it is where you are, I hope everything is alright.

Here’s the Steam sale stuff I think is cool.

Firstly, the title of Clumsy Moose Season caught my eye straight away. I already love it, and I haven’t even started it. It’s on early access, and has a nice 25% off. In this indie game, you build and play levels out of items and resources you find in levels, in order to advance what appears to be a childishly amusing story. It’s striking me as Super Meat Boy meets Trials meets Beavis and Butthead. Not sure about the humour, but I’m going to try it and see. The art style is very cartoon and simple, but it’s pleasing to watch, and makes for seamless and fun animation. Apparently the community is small and perhaps laugh their heads off at all the fart noises, so go in with tough skin…

Doctor Who: The Adventure Games has 85% off this week. I’ve been watching a lot of Dr Who recently, and spotted this on offer. I haven’t played it since it came out, and can’t remember much, other than the fact it looked amazing for a free to download game – alas, that was the UK only – and the rest of the production was nothing short of perfect. People involved in the show at the time all came together to make each ‘episode’, including the composer, actors and writers. The episodes were released periodically, and each ended up being essentially an interactive episode of the show.

Not only was the writing very sympathetic and considerate to any Who fan of the new generation, but legitimate stars of television, stage and of the widely popular Big Finish Dr Who audiobooks. It’s a must for Whovians, especially of Matt Smith’s eleventh doctor, and his best friend and companion Amy.

If you’ve never tried Divinity: Original Sin, and you like RPGs, story-rich games, action adventure, co-op gameplay, fantasy and/or half price deals on brilliant games, then go get it now. That should be all I need to say, but I’m going to flesh it out, because I love to ramble.

Divinity was completely loved by reviewers and players alike when it was released, then they made it even better with the Enhanced Edition. There are fantastic voiceovers, plus more playable content and items. The game is the first true classic RPG in years, and stays true to the formula whilst being fresh and exciting with the characters and settings. The co-op makes for wonderful hours of action, screaming at your fellow players with glee or anger, depending on where it all takes you. It’s fast-paced, and there is plenty of variety in weapons and magic to keep combat entertaining and engaging. For 50% off, it’s hard to say no.

Finally this week, I’d like to turn your attention to Painkiller Hell& Damnation. That sounds pretty, doesn’t it? It’s horrible. Think FPS, but taking WWE’s Attitude Era as an inspiration. It’s a shooter, but there isn’t much excitement about the gameplay as such. The fun comes in the form of different weapons with all sorts of wacky abilities, and from the enemies, who are just as crazy. The gore and satisfying on-screen action make this one addictive, and though it’s short, it releases some of those naughty endorphins you get from seeing bits of bone and flesh flying about.

Until next week, crazy cats, keep it real.
