Shrek 5 IS Happening!

This latest announcement from Dreamworks would fit perfectly in the category of unexpected news. Dreamworks has officially confirmed that there will be a Shrek 5 and that Austin Powers screenwriter Michael McCullers is currently writing the screenplay.

The film is expected to be released in 2019, a full nine years since the previous installment in the series: Shrek Forever After.

The news was announced by the directors of the Trolls movie, who aren’t currently involved with the project, but voiced both their enthusiasm with the sequel and their willingness to get involved if given the chance.

Now, the question arises of whether this is something that was even in high demand. The Shrek series certainly had a strong start beginning with the first two films, but interest starting waning after the next installment, and the fourth installment serving to simply serve as a conclusion, rather than a great finale.

Dreamworks needs to make this film feel actually necessary and put in that high amount of effort to sell that to audiences, as this announcement could easily be seen as Dreamworks needing a franchise to bank on, so they decide to bring in an old favorite. If Shrek 5 can feel as fresh and unique as the original Shrek did in regards to typical fairy tales, then Dreamworks may be able to relaunch a series that was previously labeled as “all used up.”

What do you think of this news? Do you think the Shrek series has any life left? Do you think the internet will be able to make any more creepy Shrek videos by that 2019 release date? Let us know in the comments!
