Wonder Woman Appointed As UN Ambassador

I Wonder what her stances are.

The United Nations was formed in 1945 to promote cooperation between nations after World War II left its sickening mark on the world. 71 years later, a comic book character has joined the ranks, as an ambassador for the empowerment of women.

Campaigners have done this in an effort to promote gender equality and female empowerment, but as with most things that are this high-profile, some people are not pleased. They feel that Wonder Woman is ill-equipped and too poorly designed to represent something this universal.

Some concerned members of the UN said this themselves as part of an online petition:

Wonder Woman was created 75 years ago. Although the original creators may have intended Wonder Woman to represent a strong and independent ‘warrior’ woman with a feminist message, the reality is that the character’s current iteration is that of a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring body suit with an American flag motif and knee high boots –the epitome of a ‘pin-up’ girl.”

As much as I love Wonder Woman, I can kind of understand some of these criticisms. It’s sad to think that we live in a world where a drawing on a page is the first thing that comes to some of us when we think of female heroes fighting for equality.

That said, it is nice, although surreal, to see these characters (with potentially archaic designs) who are used to symbolize these things and to give them the spotlight they deserve.

If you’re interested in learning more about this UN Ambassador, she has an upcoming film.
