Neil Blomkamp’s Alien movie will bring Ripley’s story to an end

As Aliens/Prometheus fans eagerly await the 2017 Ridley Scott-directed Alien: Covenant, many fans are stuck wondering what happened to Neil Blomkamp’s Alien film. Following Prometheus and the somewhat mixed fan and critical reaction, 20th Century Fox didn’t know what to do with the series.

Neil Blomkamp, famous for District 8, Elysium, and the recent Chappie, stepped up to the plate and let it be known that he had a script for an Alien sequel starring everyone’s favorites from the original movies (the ones that are still alive at least). Sigourney Weaver agreed to do it, everything was falling in place, but then Ridley Scott decided that he’d do a sequel to Prometheus and call it Alien: Covenant. Fox agreed to streamline Scott’s sequel and put Blomkamp’s film on the “backburner” in the meantime.

Not many updates have come from Blomkamp on the state of his film or really anything about it, but in a recent interview with Variety, Weaver mentions that she’s still holding out hope for the next installment in the Alien series.

“I hope that Neill Blomkamp and I will eventually get back to it. He’s written such a wonderful script. I look forward to finishing Ripley’s story.

Well, if that doesn’t entice long-time Alien fans, it’s hard to say what will. It’s believed that Blomkamp’s film would conclude Ripley’s story by taking her character to the heart of where all the Aliens come from. It would end her character arc and the nightmare she’s endured over the course of the series.

While there are no additional updates for THIS Alien movie, at least Weaver is still optimistic of the project. Perhaps if Alien: Covenant kills it at the box office, then this project will become a reality.

In the meantime, Alien: Covenant comes out May 19th, 2017.
