Super Mario Run is released and smashes records in the process

2016 will be remembered for a lot of things, most of them bad to be fair, but one thing it will be remembered for is the way that Pokémon GO took the mobile gaming world by storm in the summer, becoming one of the most talked about games in general in the process.

Pokémon GO might have to take a back-seat to being mobile gaming go-to title of 2016, as Super Mario Run launched and has been a much bigger hit than Nintendo expected, with 3x more downloads at launch than Pokémon GO according to The Verge website.

Whilst Pokémon GO was downloaded 900,000 times on its launch day, Super Mario Run has completely smashed that by being downloaded 2.85 million times in the same time period. This is however a bit of a skewed interpretation of the facts and figures, and is a little unfair to Pokémon GO as Super Mario Run was a worldwide launch on the same day (hitting 150 countries at once), whilst Pokémon GO was subject to a much more staggered release period across the world (being released to just 3 countries initially).

Something that might be a bit more of an indication of the initial success of Super Mario Run, will be how it’s first full week downloads compare to Pokémon GO.

It is not known if these figures are indicative of the full version of Super Mario Run, as the free version includes just a few levels, where the full version is obtainable only through a one-time in-app purchase of $9.99.

Super Mario Run is the first of 3 planned mobile gaming apps to be released by Nintendo, with games based on Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem also in the pipeline.
