Ben Affleck steps down as director of The Batman, continues to remain “extremely committed” to project

In depressing news, Ben Affleck has decided to step down from the director’s chair for the upcoming Batman standalone movie. The announcement was made from Affleck himself when he discussed how the decision came to be.

“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions,” Affleck said in a statement. “Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”

It may be sad news to stomach, but this may be for the best. For just this movie, Ben Affleck would be the lead role, the producer, the screenwriter, AND the director. That’s an awful lot to put on just one person’s shoulders, regardless of their talent. It’s better that he puts his best effort in his performance than it is for him to half-heartedly try to direct and act. It’s certainly disappointing, but with Affleck remaining heavily involved in the creative process, his influence will continue to be at the core of The Batman.

Now, one question: who should replace him? Early names being thrown around so far have been War of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves and Gavin O’ Connor (fresh off of The Accountant also starring Ben Affleck). It’ll likely be some time before WB and Affleck decide on someone, but we’ll keep you posted!
