First announced in July of 2016, Sonic Mania returns to the roots of the franchise as a 2D side-scrolling game. Even the graphics are a throwback, with sprite-based scenery. Originally announced for the PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One platforms, Sonic Mania has been confirmed to be coming to the Nintendo Switch as well.

Players can take control of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles in both original and remixed levels. Sonic also has a new special ability called Drop Dash, allowing him to go directly into a rolling spin after a jump. Sonic Mania is currently expected to launch sometime in the second quarter of 2017 on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.
