Steam Sales Writer’s Picks – January 19th

Steam Sale Writer's Picks

So, January is getting closer to its end. I don’t like wishing time away, but the end of this month sees the WWE Royal Rumble, and the beginning of my birthday month. I’m going to be 30, and it will be amazing.

Anyway, here are my picks from this weeks sale items.

Steep

In terms of sports simulation games, nothing will beat Skate and its successors, but Steep has done its best to bring some of that magic to the world of snow and mountain sports, and you can grab it for a third off as part of the midweek madness.

Being a relatively new title, it’s still going to cost a little bit of money. There’s also an argument for getting the game on console rather than PC, but it’s is a no-brainer if you have a controller hooked up. There are hours of potential mess ups and extreme scenes of beautiful mountainous countryside to see, as well as some pretty solid gameplay too. You can play in a sandbox map of either Alaska or the Alps, and I can tell you from personal experience of the Alps, that this is pretty close to the real thing.

The difficulty ranges between different run options, and it also depends on how you decide to descend the mountain; skis, snowboard, paraglide or wingsuit. Depending on how elegant and fast you get through the levels, points are earned and you can find yourself on the leaderboards. There are also opportunities to show off your fails, and keep them to look back on like a holiday scrapbook.

Online play and share is a big factor in the marketing of Steep, and you can hook up with other players easily to race and compete in challenges, or simply to add to that scrapbook together.

SUPERHOT

This unique and stylistic puzzle FPS deserves the recognition it gets. Along similar lines to Portal in its rethinking of genre, and clean graphics, SUPERHOT is not for the easily frustrated. Get it now for 33% off.

There isn’t really a storyline, so I’m not going to spoil what little there is, but go into it with a James Bond/Matrix idea of getting to the main baddie and finding the truth. Each level is different, in many ways. The layout changes, and becomes more difficult to work around, but you can often use it to your advantage. The enemy numbers differ, and you have to look at every angle they are coming from. Their weapons also vary, meaning your defence and attack has to reflect that.

The main mechanic that you must get used to, is that time only moves when you move. So, you can judge your surroundings, and how best to face the enemies, but the trick comes with being able to dodge the attacks from all the angles they come from. One hit, and you are dead. For example, two enemies are coming at you head on, and another is hidden to the right of you. Whilst you are dodging the two, you see the one on the right come out of hiding, and now have to dodge their attack too. It becomes trickier and trickier, but once you get a swing of things, it draws you in, and you become part of the world. It’s even more thrilling in VR on Oculus.

Endless Grand Master Collection

Indie RPG strategy titles are my bag, as you may well know by now. The Endless Grand Master Collection is a whole mass of games that you can get to satisfy your cravings for all settings for an epic 85% off.

There are three series, each having their own add-ons and expansions. The first is a rogue-like dungeon defense title, Dungeon of the Endless; the next is a fantasy world with factions to choose from and build civilisations with, Endless Legend; and the last is a sci-fi set strategy with some amazing looking space battles, Endless Space. It’s all a bit endless, but in a good way.

Each title is great in its own right; well written, solid gameplay and a real feel that getting to the goal is going to pay off.

Deadpool

I can’t remember if I’ve talked about this one before. How meta is that? Deadpool will love it. Anyway grab his very own video game for half price.

It’s a pretty standard action story game; linear and slightly repetitive, but it’s the story that I love in this game. It’s classic comic book Deadpool, complete with commentary and fourth wall breakages from Nolan North. I honestly didn’t think the movie was as amazing as everyone led me to believe. Maybe it was overhyped, I don’t know, but either way, the game has far more moments for me to love and laugh at.

Special Mention: Yesterday Origins

I spoke about this game in a review a couple of months ago, and it was a mixed response from me. However, Yesterday Origins has a really interesting idea behind it, and some great questions posed about the past of our world. Anything like that is right up my street. You can get the game for 34% off.

This is a point and click adventure, with some really interesting puzzles. The protagonist has a thoroughly intriguing past, going back centuries, and the set pieces are really well done. It’s a gem if you can forgive awkward voice acting and crazy characters.

Well, that’s me for the week. My next plan is to motivate myself to do something over the next couple of weeks that are left of the month. January is always a bit of a tough one. I’m cold.
