During the Activision investor call today, several interesting pieces of information were revealed. Activision confirmed that while many fans enjoyed the title, overall, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, underperformed sales-wise. Because of this, they are placing a renewed emphasis on the differences Call of Duty 2017 will have. This game is planned to take the series “back to its roots“. Activision also confirmed that the Call of Duty ecosystem remains incredibly strong. It has stayed the number 1 franchise in North America for the past eight years, according to the NPD.

This is very interesting, to say the least. Exactly what “back to its roots” means is obviously open to interpretation. That said, I think it’s fair to say we won’t see another Call of Duty set in space. However, with such an abundance of early World War 2 shooters, would that really be the setting to return to? Even with several theaters of war left to cover, it seems unlikely. After the success of Battlefield 1, it wouldn’t surprise me to see a World War 1-based COD title. Regardless, the most important thing is that the game returns to classic boots-on-the-ground combat.

Since it is releasing this year, we shouldn’t be waiting much longer for more details.
