If you’ve been following the gaming news on Twitter today, you may have seen some panicked tweets about Middle-earth: Shadow of War. Specifically, that the game needs you to always be online in order to play. This has understandably caused some confusion and annoyance amongst gamers. That said however, you can relax. We are happy to confirm that this is false, Middle-earth: Shadow of War does not require you to be online just to play.

This information comes via one of the developers at Monolith Productions, who confirmed the game was playable offline in a discord chat which was then posted on the official subreddit.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War does not require you to be onlineAs Jared notes, anything in the game that is an online feature, whether it be an update, the marketplace or anything else, will require an internet connection for obvious reasons. Just playing the game however, will not.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War releases on October 10th for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Steam and Windows 10. It’s also confirmed to get PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X upgrades, as well as supporting Xbox Play Anywhere.
