The Nintendo Switch is now the fastest-selling console of all time in the U.S.

In a press release today, Nintendo announced that the Nintendo Switch is now the fastest-selling console of all time in the U.S. Within 10 months, the Switch has sold over 4.8 million copies, supplanting the Wii which sold 4 million in the same timeframe.

Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President, stated that “Fans across the country have experienced the joy of playing their favorite games at home or on the go. Now that many more people have received Nintendo Switch systems for the holidays, we look forward to bringing them fun new surprises in 2018 and beyond.”

Nintendo credited the success to games like Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which have attach rates of over 60% and 55% respectively. They also confirmed that fans could look forward to releases in 2018 including a game starring Yoshi, Bayonetta, and Bayonetta 2. Confirmed third-party support includes such names as EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Capcom, SEGA, Take 2 and Bethesda.

This is absolutely insane success for Nintendo and a welcome bounce back after the underperformance of the Wii U. I recently wrote about some of what we might see from Nintendo in 2018, so it’ll be interesting to see if they can maintain this pace (I absolutely believe they can).
