Phil Spencer says Microsoft will grow more first-party content

Microsoft will grow more first-party content
Phil Spencer is the Head of Xbox

While talk of the Xbox One X and True Power dominate online discussions, there’s no denying that Xbox has had some problems with its first-party lineup over the last couple of years, from the closure of Lionhead to the cancellation of Scalebound. Additionally, there have been delays affecting much-needed games like Crackdown 3. In an interview with Bloomberg, Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox, explained that this is an area that needs to be focused on and that Microsoft will grow more first-party content in the future.

Spencer stated that We need to grow, and I look forward to doing that. Our ability to go create content has to be one of our strengths. We haven’t always invested at the same level. We’ve gone through ups and downs in the investment.”

Given Phil Spencer’s recent promotion and how he now directly reports to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, I think we can remain optimistic regarding this statement. By making gaming a more important focus for Microsoft overall, opening new first-party studios and brand-new IPs would become a much easier task, though of course still not one that will happen overnight.

With the much-anticipated launch of the Xbox One X accomplished, there needs to be a plan for the years ahead. It seems to me that E3 2018 would be the perfect time to show off such a new investment. Without any roadmap to speak of however, we’ll just have to wait and see.
