Phil Spencer has been the Head of Xbox since March 2014, when he took over the position and succeeded Don Mattrick, the previous head. Now, Phil Spencer has been promoted again, this time to Executive Vice President of Gaming at Microsoft. This news comes via Business Insider.
With this promotion, Spencer is now a member of CEO Satya Nadella’s leadership team. As a part of this role, he now directly reports to Nadella instead of Terry Myerson, the executive vice president of the Windows and Devices Group. Spencer took to Twitter to share his thoughts:
Thanks to everyone for the very nice comments today, great show of commitment by MS to the Gaming opportunity, proud to be part of this team

Phil Spencer did a lot to turn the Xbox One around at launch, from controversial policies to a focus that didn’t have gaming at its core. Hopefully this promotion means new projects, funding and games for the Xbox brand are at work, which in turn means great things for gamers. The Xbox One X is a huge focus right now as it should be however, confidence for things further down the pipeline is always a plus.
