Earlier this year, we learned that Valve was in fact developing brand new single-player games. Now, we have some clarity on these upcoming titles. According to Eurogamer, founder of Valve, Gabe Newell, confirmed that “Right now we’re building three VR games.”He then clarified that “When I say we’re building three games, we’re building three full games, not experiments.” He didn’t give any other details about the games except for the fact they are being built using the Source 2 and Unity engines.

Gabe Newell went on to explain that people need compelling reasons to pick up VR headsets. Pricing is one issue but software is another. Existing content isn’t enough, people want games built for VR from the ground up. That’s the kind of software that will allow VR to gain significant market share. Without it, widespread growth will be very difficult, if not impossible.

Gabe Newell is also of the firm belief that the display technology will improve dramatically in the coming years. Currently, the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive use resolutions of 2160 x 1200, while PSVR uses 1920x 1080. These aren’t bad displays by any means, however, they use a much lower resolution than many TVs or monitors that are available. Gabe doesn’t think this will always be the case though, stating that “You’ll actually see the VR industry sort of leapfrogging pretty much any other display technology in terms of those characteristics. It’s probably not obvious from the first generation of products, but you’ll start to see that happening like in 2018-2019.”

All of this is fascinating, giving us much more insight as to just where Valve is placing its efforts. With the recent issues surrounding Oculus, this could allow Valve to surge forward in the VR space. Of course, there is still Windows 10 VR and PSVR to content with, so it’s not quite that simple. Time will have to tell though. Let’s hope we get more information on these games fairly soon.
