Microsoft says frame rates will not be different on Project Scorpio

A couple of weeks ago at E3 2016, Microsoft revealed their new console that they have been working on and it is called Project Scorpio. Fans have been extremely excited on Twitter and speculation about the console has been crazy. There has been talks of a partnership with Oculus to try to get VR on the Xbox, however they haven’t announced this and fans have been upset since E3 when they found out that there may not be VR on the Xbox.

Due to the power of the Project Scorpio fans and press have been speculating about what this power boost from the Scorpio could provide in terms of graphics and resolution, however according to Microsoft Studios General Manager Shannon Loftis, frame rates would not differ between the Xbox One that released in 2013 and Project Scorpio that is due to release in 2017 as this is something that is left to the developer to decided upon not the console itself.

“No, there wouldn’t be a frame rate difference, because typically the frame rate is determined by the game developer and what’s right for the gameplay mechanic,” Loftis says. “You don’t necessarily want to create two different mechanics for two different configurations.”

Would that mean games limited to lower frame rates on Xbox One now would stay at lower frame rates, despite the new capabilities of the Scorpio?

“Typically, yes. A good example is Killer Instinct, which is cross-play on PC and Xbox One. We have locked the frame rate to 60 frames per second,” Loftis says. “We could do better on super high end PCs, but that ruins the competitive nature of it.”
