As if there was any doubt, Disney has conquered the holiday movie season for the second year in a row. It was the Force Awakens that broke box office records last year, and it seems Rogue One is certainly no slouch with audiences either. In its third weekend, Rogue One earned a total of $64,336,000, boosting the film’s worldwide cumulative gross to $789,714,705. It’s clear that fans of the Star Wars series have not failed to show their love and support for the film as the movie has seen a successful couple of weeks. Also, with this weekend, Rogue One had plenty of valiant contenders.

Rogue One

Sing came in a very close second at the box office with a $56,400,000 weekend take, boosting its total to $277 million (not quite Minions-level financial success, but a success regardless). Passengers came in third with $20.7 million intake in its second weekend, with Moana (another Disney movie? OF COURSE) and Why Him rounding out the top 5 with $14.3 and $13 million respectively.

On the side of films who are more of the Oscar-contender variety, there was a bit of a heated competition between Denzel Washington’s Fences and La-La Land, with Fences achieving victory with a $10 million dollar weekend total. La-La Land concluded its weekend with a $9.5 million haul.

As always, the lesson to take away with this week’s box office totals is that Disney has a particular business model that has kept them in the top 5 of the box office seemingly every weekend (as long as Disney has a movie out, you know it’ll be near the top). With Episode VIII set to release during the 2017 holiday season, it’s a pretty easy guess to assume that Disney has no plans to slow down anytime soon.

Recommended Movie of the Week: If you’re a fan of the movie Whiplash or musicals or jazz or movies that make you feel all of the emotions, then La-La Land is an easy recommendation to you. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are electric together, with Stone giving a career-best performance. All of this accompanied with top-notch (and extremely catch) musical numbers and Damien Chazelle’s exceptional directing, it’s a movie that deserves to be rewarded for the amount of work put into it.
