Cross-play for Fortnite is coming your way

Well in a move that has pretty much surprised everyone; Sony made it known today that cross-play is on its way.

Making an announcement over their blog, Sony revealed how “following a comprehensive evaluation process” they have found a way to make cross-platform features available for “selected third party content”. The first stage of this will be an open beta which begins today for Fortnite, allowing cross-platform, progression and commerce across PS4, Switch, Xbox One, PC and mobile platforms.

In the blog, Sony acknowledges that this announcement is a shift in previous policy:

“For 24 years, we have strived to deliver the best gaming experience to our fans by providing a uniquely PlayStation perspective. Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players. In recognition of this, we have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform.

This represents a major policy change for SIE, and we are now in the planning process across the organization to support this change.”

It sounds like this is just the start and other cross-platform advancements are in the works and will be announced in the future. This is a great move from Sony, it’s a shame it took so long for it to come through. That being said, it was something the community wanted and Sony finally made it work. Whether that was entirely willingly is another matter.
