Now that I’ve stopped jumping around the room like a hyped up squeaker at a Bieber concert (deep breath) I can tell you that today Gearbox Software in conjunction with Lionsgate officially announced a Borderlands movie is in the works.
To add to my excitement, this is no B-Budget unworthy attempt at capitalizing on a well-known name brand either. No, Lionsgate has pulled out some of the big guns. Teaming up with Marvel Studios founders Avi and son Ari Arad whose production credits include Spider Man, The Amazing Spider Man, X-Men, Iron Man, Ghost Rider and Blade.
When discussing the film earlier today Lionsgate Motion Pictures Group co-chairs Rob Freidman and Patrick Wachsberger stated:
“We believe that we’ve brought together the right partners, the ideal creative team and the perfect property to launch a new motion picture tentpole for a global audience.”
They also added that the movie will be produced with the “same in your face attitude” that made the game a global success. All of this coming just months before the release of Lionsgate’s final Hunger Games adaptation, Mocking Jay Part 2, hits theaters.
Boderlands (the game) has been incredibly successful globally selling 26 Million game titles since its launch in 2009 and becoming a huge part of the gaming subculture. I can only hope that the team behind the upcoming feature film does the game justice. If they do, this is set up to be a Blockbuster.
Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford will be speaking more about the movie on today’s PAX Prime Panel. Tune in via twitch at 4PM PT / 7PM ET at the link below.
