A Willy Wonka Prequel is in the works (because reasons)

Yes, it appears that you ARE reading that headline right. Warner Bros. and producer David Heyman have acquired the rights to the Willy Wonka IP and seem prepared to tell a Willy Wonka origin story.

It’s unknown if there will be any characters from the original that will be in the film outside of Mr. Wonka himself, but there’s potential for appearances of characters like Charlie if the initial film is a success.

The script is going to be written by The Secret Life of Pets writer Simon Rich. There are no confirmed directors or actors in negotiation for the movie, but there surely will be once a release date is set and planned.

In the meantime, hold your breath original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory fans, and hope that Warner Bros. just kind of forgets about this whole project and just moves on to something else. We can hope, right?
